Kevin Maloney for Mantua Village Council

Kevin Maloney is seeking election to Mantua Village Council.

1. Why are you running for office, and what previous experience makes you the most qualified candidate for this position?

To serve the citizens of The Village of Mantua.

2. If elected, what do you hope to accomplish in this position?

To make our Village a better place to live, for ALL of its residents.

3. What are three policy initiatives you plan to focus on if elected?

Improving infrastructure, access to affordable housing, better and more responsive Village services.

4. What can local governments do to encourage young adults to stay in Northeast Ohio?

Promote local investment in high paying jobs, and affordable housing. Prioritize quality education and robust municiple services. Partner with local businesses, non-profits, civic groups, and community leaders to provide equal opportunities for constituents.

5. Will you support nondiscrimination policies that protect individuals regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, veterans status, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression? If so, how?

YES! Where appropriate, introduce new, or ammend existing legislation to remove institutionalized discrimination and barriers to equal rights and opportunities. Encourage local businesses and community organizations to put equality at the forefront of their operations and activities.

6. Do you support reasonable regulations on firearms in the United States? Please explain in detail. Yes. I support the second amendment

AS IT WAS WRITTEN. The word "well regulated" should mean something.

7. What will you do to actively engage young adults in local government?

Lead by example, and show that local government can be effectively, efficient, and a vehicle for positive change.

8. Describe your vision on public safety and your plans for crime prevention?

Having a well-trained, well equipped police department is a top priority. Community outreach from our law enforcement officers should be encouraged. If the community knows and trusts the police, the citizens will be active partners in public safety.

9. What should your locality be doing to ensure racial equity and eliminating bias in community policing?

Training within law enforcement is a very important factor in reducing racial bias in policing. I would support additional training for police, and a zero-tolerance policy regarding racial bias or profiling in law enforcement.

10. The Environment

Experts agree that a key to reducing the effects of climate disruption is to reduce our dependence on, and use of, carbon-based fuels, including oil, natural gas and coal. Please answer the following questions related to the environment in detail.

10-A. Should local governments play a role in phasing out the use of fossil fuels by our municipalities? If so, what role should a local legislator play?

Where practical, absolutely. Everything that can be done to reduce carbo emissions should be encouraged.

10-B. Do you support the use of "Fracking" (hydraulic fracturing) to extract oil or gas within your city, or would you support a ban on Fracking?

I would absolutely support a ban on Fracking.

11. In June of last year, the United States Supreme Court overturned the landmark case Roe vs. Wade, which guaranteed a persons right to safe and legal abortion access. What role should local government play in adovcating for access to safe and legal abortion services?

Reproductive health care IS health care. And safe and affordable access to abortion is an important public health priority. It should be treated like any other health care priority.

12. The state of Ohio has continually cut funds to local governments over the last decade. How do you plan on operating within the confines of an already reduced local budget, without cutting critical services to tax payers?

We need to do everything possible to spend our budget wisely, as well as increase our tax base with higher incomes and growth of local businesses.

13. What can be done to create and/or attract new businesses with good paying jobs and benefits in the City? How can we encourage new businesses, and existing businesses, to become an active part of our community?

Treat businesses as partners in the community, and provide conditions where they can grow and thrive. Improving infrastructure and the quality of education in the community will go a long way to provide those conditions.

14. Should the City reduce the cost of services by contracting out or privatizing government services? Why or why not?

My preference is to keep services "in-house" when more efficient, and more cost effective. Outsourcing services must be properly negotiated and managed, to assure the community gets the best services possible for their taxes.

15. Do you feel that housing in your City is affordable and available for young people and families? If not, what will you do to address this issue?

Both availability and affordability need to be improved. Where possible, incentivizing and encouraging investment in additional, affordable housing.
