Speakers at Jan. 6 Candelight Vigil In Kent Call on Citizens to Vote

"Young people decide elections.

. . .

One third of the voters in portage county are young voters - that’s a lot of people. That’s enough people to sway an election - to decide if your local school levy gets passed - to decide who we send to the statehouse in Columbus.

33,000 young people with the opportunity to make their voices heard - and more importantly - the opportunity to make their voices make a difference.

Young pe

ople decide elections.

At least when they show up.”

RECORD COURIER | Nearly 80 area residents gathered on a blustery, icy evening for an outdoor candlelight vigil where organizers called for solidarity in the face of the forces that fomented the attack on the Capitol Building last Jan. 6, when Congress was set to certify President Joseph Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

Amid the messages sent by speakers, the one that came through loudest was the importance of participating in government by voting.

. . .

Christopher Clevenger-Morris, president of the Portage County Young Democrats, said it’s also critical to reach out to young voters and encourage their participation.

“One-third of the voters here in Portage County are young voters, and that's a lot of people that can decide an election, that can decide if a school levy gets passed, that can decide who we send to represent us in Columbus,” he said. “In 2020, nearly half of all young people in the United States participated in voting; that’s an increase of 11% from 2016. Imagine if that 11% had shown up four years before. You probably wouldn’t be standing here tonight. Young people win elections.”
