Record Courier: Young Democrats make endorsement in Portage, statewide races

The Portage County Young Democrats have made candidate endorsements for the 2022 Primary Election.

The Young Democrats have posted more information about endorsed Democrats, and completed candidate questionnaires, on the group's website. 

Dr. Geraldine Hayes-Nelson, president of the Portage County NAACP, was endorsed in her bid for Portage County commissioner. She and Tim Moon, an investigator at the Portage County prosecutor's office, are seeking the party's nomination for the seat held by Commissioner Vicki Kline, who is not seeking another term.

"Dr. Geraldine Nelson has been a pillar in the greater Portage County Community for over 30 years," said Christopher Clevenger-Morris, president of the Young Democrats "She’s dedicated her career to advocating for young people, and to fighting for and lifting up underserved communities across Northeast Ohio. Her experience in higher education and social justice, in budget management and personnel management, and her unique perspective, will be crucial in moving Portage County forward."

The Democratic nominee will either face Mike Tinlin, former Aurora police chief, or Ed Ed Dean, a Deerfield trustee, who are running in the Republican primary. 

Brad Cromes also was endorsed for auditor. Cromes, Portage County treasurer, is the lone Democrat seeking the seat of longtime Auditor Janet Esposito, who is retiring He will face one of four Republicans seeking the seat — Kristy Elliott of Deerfield, Brian Ames of Randolph, Deborah Mann of Aurora and Matt Kelly of Suffield.

Kathleen Clyde, a former state representative who also served as a Portage County commissioner, was endorsed in her bid to retake a seat in the statehouse. She is expected to challenge the incumbent, Republican Gail Pavliga, in November. 

In statewide races, endorsed candidates include Nan Whaley for Ohio governor and Cheryl Stephens for lt. governor; Chelsea Clark for secretary of state; Jeffrey Crossman for attorney general; Scott Schertzer for treasurer and Taylor Sappington for auditor.

Judicial endorsements were Justice Jennifer Brunner for Ohio Supreme Court chief justice; Judge Terri Jamison for Ohio Supreme Court; Judge Marilyn Zayas for Ohio Supreme Court; Judge Thomas Wright for Court of Appeals, 11th District; and locally, Judge Laurie Pittman for Portage County Common Pleas Court and Judge Paula Giulitto for Common Pleas Court, Domestic Relations. There will not be a primary in the local judicial races. 

The group has endorsed U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, who is running for U.S. Senate, and Matt Kilboy, a native of Deerfield, who is running for U.S. House in the 14th district.
